One of the most iconic Australian Adventures is the Great Ocean Road of Southern Victoria. The highlight of the Great Ocean Road tour is the 12 Apostles, and the best way to see them is by helicopter. I personally had never ridden in a helicopter before this, but had always wanted to. On our tour they announced we had the option to either walk down and check them out, or pay an additional $70 and fly over the 12 Apostles by helicopter. This was a no brainer for me, although that’s a lot of money, it doesn’t seem bad for a helicopter ride, and it’s one of those once in a lifetime opportunities you can only regret not doing.
If you’re in Australia and interested in seeing the Great Ocean Road and / or the 12 Apostles, I’ll tell you how we booked it. We started by booking a tour out of Nomads hostel in Melbourne. You can rent your own car and drive it yourself fairly easily, but we opted for the mini bus tour which is a lot more relaxing. I don’t recall the exact amount we paid, but I believe it was around $250 Australian which included 3 days, 2 nights accommodation, a dinner, some drinks and snacks, transportation from Melbourne to as far as the Grampians and back, with all the stops along the way. Not a bad deal on Australian standards, and the tour was a ton of fun. The 12 Apostles are located towards the end of the Great Ocean Road, but well before the Grampians. If memory serves we reached them near the end of the first day.
When we stopped at the 12 Apostles our tour guide said we’d probably have time to do the helicopter ride and walk down to them, but the line for the helicopters took longer than expected, and we didn’t actually have time. It would have been nice to see them on foot, but if you have the choice it’s way better by helicopter. They had several helicopters running when we were there, and the tour was short, only around 10 minutes (the entire tour is shown in the video at the bottom of the page).
