Q. Couple questions… Right now we are just going to be on the west side of the islands in thailand. Do you recall it being easy to get to side to side? If so i really want to go to KohPhi Phi. We are going to get certified to dive in koh tao. Do you recommend that or should we do it in Koh Phi Phi?
Good, glad you guys found it helpful, youre going to have such a good time. I’m a little confused by your message, I thought Koh Tao was the east side, either I think the end answer youre looking for is, it wasnt very difficult, and it wasnt super easy to get across the country, it was in between. I’m sure there are flights, we took a bus and some ferrys, and we had to transfer a few times. Its not bad, usually there will be a group who has to switch, and the operators will kind of tell you whats up. I believe to get from Koh Samui to Koh Phi Phi it took us about 6-8 hours? I could be way off, but thats what I’m remembering. You can go to any number of travel agencies when youre there and book the day before, they’ll tell you what to do.
You guys definetely should get to Phi Phi if you can, the diving there was really cool, and there are a ton of rad little beaches (like the real one from the movie “The Beach”, or Monkey Island). I think either place would be fine to get certified. I got certified in Koh Tao, then loved it so much I got my advanced certification in Phi Phi. Both places had really cool dive school and instructors, and if I could do it over again I wouldnt change a thing, other than staying longer. Not sure if I mentioned it in my other email, but I dove with Phoenix Divers in Koh Tao, my instructor was this Scottish dude Neil Farmer, he was super cool, I’ll for sure dive with him again if I go back. In Phi Phi I dove with Island Divers, my instructor was William (Billy I think) Thorburn, and I think he was from Ireland, another really cool laid back guy. I’m pretty sure most everyone you come across is going to be really good, but if you want recomendations I loved both my instructors. There is a shipwreck dive in Phi Phi which we did, it was so cool.
Sorry to ramble, bottom line, easy enough to make it worth it to get to Phi Phi, and you can dive in either place, but should probably do both.
