The show is about the lifeguards at Bondi Beach. Bondi is unique in that it gets many tens of thousands of visitors in just half a mile of beach, many whom are foreigners and can’t swim. The currents at Bondi can be quite powerful at times, and its a sand beach, so the bottom can often be uneven, making it easy for swimmers to go from waist high water to above their head in seconds. This keeps the lifeguards busy; they also have to deal with sharks, jellyfish, a lot of drunks, thiefs, skatepark injuries, and plenty of crazy people, making it entertaining for us.
The majority of Australia’s population lives on the coast, and the majority of their tourist industry is based on the coast and its waters, so Australia takes their life guarding very seriously. At any given time on Bondi Beach you may see as many as 5-10 life guards or volunteer life savers. After you see the show you may start to recognize some of the guys, and you’ll usually see the film crew on a hot summer day.
If you’ve been to Bondi Beach, or are interested in going, check out this TV Show, Bondi Rescue. I don’t think it airs outside Australia, so if you’re not in the country you can find it on youtube or download the torrents, otherwise it plays on Channel 9.
