Largest Sand Island In the World – Fraser Island

Fraser Island Beach
Beaches, Streams, Sand Dunes and Forest cover Fraser Island

Fraser Island is one of the best places to visit in Australia, worth going out of your way to see. Fly into Brisbane, and head a couple hours North to Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, or Hervey Bay, the 3 crossing points over to Fraser. You have several options on how to get around: you can rent your own 4X4 doing everything yourself, do a self drive tour, where you ride along in a caravan of 4X4s, but drive your own vehicle, or take one of the massive offroad buses in a group of 15-25. I made the mistake of doing the bus tour, because my license had expired, and this tour provided transport in and out of Gold Coast; I knew straight away this was a mistake.

Amsterdam Red Light District
A typical night on the streets of the Red Light District

Aside from the legalized or decriminalized or whatever, you can get pot there, aspect of Amsterdam it’s an incredibly beautiful, picturesque city. Stripped by canals, bridges, and great architecture the city could easily stand on it’s own if pot and prostitution weren’t legal. Now that you know there is more to the city than pot and prostitution, let’s get to what you want to know about Amsterdam... pot and prostitution.

Beachfront Bars and Restaurants on the bay in San Juan Del Sur

San Juan Del Sur is Nicaragua's Premier destination on the Pacific. The colorful buildings and gorgeous beaches make it an ideal stopover on your way through Nicaragua. Flying into Managua International Airport, take the local "chicken bus" to get to San Juan Del Sur. In Nicaragua they use re-painted old school buses for their public transport, you'll be amongst almost entirely locals, its cheaper and more fun.

The Oldest Stone Building in New Zealand
The Oldest Stone Building in New Zealand, Kerikeri Bay

Kerikeri is a backpackers best and worst nightmare about 3 hours north of Auckland. If you're travelling on a budget around the North Island, Kerikeri is definetely a place you can find work. The city, like most citys in New Zealand, is pretty small and basic. There's a local supermarket, a few shops and a Mcdonalds (of course!). Unless you have a car you cant really get to the outer edges to see what little else it has to offer....theres a chocolate factory, a few prehistoric buildings and you can check out Rewa's Village - the start of a bush trail. Finally, they've got Rainbow Falls waterfall, which is nice to look at, but nothing spectacular.

Drinking Fjian Cava With The Locals
Drinking Cava with the locals at a “Cava Ceremony”

If you're visiting fiji you have to try cava! Cava is a local drink usually drank with a group of people in a 'cava ceremony' it is made from a plant root grown on the main land. The root is ground down in to a fine powder, its then wrapped in muslin cloth and put in water it is dipped in and out and squeezed many, many times until all the goodness from the roots is realised in to the water.

Q. I'm going to be in China and Korea for a school consulting project in May, but have about 12 days to travel on the back end and want to go to SE Asia for a bit. I just wanted your thoughts on how to best spend my relatively short amount of time and money.

Surfers Paradise – Mix Cancun & Las Vegas With A Little Huntington Beach

Surfers Paradise Beach
The beach in Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise in the Gold Coast of Australia is a city for tourists. Comprised of mostly bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels, and apartments, the city caters to all types of travelers. If you plan on visiting around November / December, know that the city tends to be taken over by schoolies - students on break who party non stop. This may not be the best time to visit if thats not what you're looking for, however, for some of you maybe it is?

Cayo Jutias, Cuba
A View of the Caribbean and the beach at Cayo Jutias, Cuba

The clammy heat in Cuba can really wear you and your inner thighs down, and sometimes the only thing that will provide temporary relief is a cool swim and a couple of mojitos. Luckily, there is always a beach relatively close by to calm your chaffed thighs and a mojito to restore your spirit. Cayo Jutias is an exceptional example of one of those beaches that also serves mojitos. The 4 mile white sand beach of Cayo Jutias, Pinar del Río, is the perfect spot to cool down, and if you are in the mood, drink up. Cayo Jutias is a small islet just 40 miles outside of Viñales. You can catch a bus for the day, or take a rental car toward the town of Minas de Matahambre and then take the stone causeway that leads to the secluded beach on the Caribbean.
