Didn't "geek" used to be derogatory? When once to be called a "geek" was enough to cause one to have a lifelong inferiority complex, it now is considered a badge of honor. Consider Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg--both self-described lifelong geeks. Who's laughing now?
The Himalayas, which in Sanskrit means “abode of snow,” is a mountain system in Asia that rises sharply from the Gangetic Plain, in many parts over 8000 meters high. It forms a broad, continuous arc for nearly 2,600 kilometers along the northern fringes of the Indian subcontinent and the south of the Tibetan Plateau (Qing Zang Gaoyuan). It extends from the bend of the Indus River in the northwest to the Brahmaputra River in the east, averaging 320 to 400 kilometers in width.
The movie Avatar smashed all sorts of box office records, and set the bar for all future 3D films. Pandora, the planet in Avatar, got people dreaming of a better world, but if you look around you'll see that a lot of places here on earth actually inspired this Pandora environment. I know it's a bit geeky, but this article is a collection nature photos which I found to be Pandora-like, or out of this world, or just really cool.
I hate travel days, packing up your bag, dealing with whatever means of transport is necessary to get to your next destination, and especially crossing borders. Borders are some of the most stressful places on earth, they're generally crowded, everybody is nervous, excited, tired, and just wants to get through and move on. It's not much better for the people working at them either, they have to deal with these people who are tired and stressed out, which in turn wears them down. Borders are also a place of great opportunity for locals; tourists are generally out of place, uncomfortable, unable to properly communicate, and easy to take advantage of. This translates to dollar signs for the clever, tricky, and/or dishonest locals looking to make a buck off the passing tourist, and even more stress and uncertainty for that tourist.
The New7Wonders Foundation has recently provisionally nominated the New 7 Wonders of Nature from Zurich, Switzerland. The list was selected by a combination of votes and "expert judging" from a group of 28 finalists. There are some big ones missing like the Grand Canyon and Great Barrier Reef. I'm not sure I like this list very much, but I thought it was worth posting.

I've been to Lisbon, I stayed in a couple hostels there. They were nice, but if I were to come up with a list of the top 5 hostels I've personally stayed in (and I've stayed in a lot), no hostel in Portugal, let alone Lisbon would make it. Look at the 2011 Hoscar Awards, which HostelWorld gives out each year. The top 3 (out of the listed 3) hostels worldwide are all from the same city! Lisbon or anywhere else, how can one city host the top 3 hostels in the world???

By now the secret is out. The evolution of budget travel has gone from $5 for a crappy dorm bed to a free private room. With the explosion of sites like CouchSurfing.org a new generation of penny pinching backpackers are able to travel further for cheaper. As a CS Ambassador, i'm always finding myself caught up in the philosophical (and moral) discussion of CouchSurfing being more than merely a free place to stay. It is instead an opportunity to share cultural experiences with locals (or quite often ex-pats) giving you an inside scoop. While you aren't paying for the room/bed/couch/floor space, a token gesture of a cooked meal or bottle of wine is always a welcome thank-you from the surfer. But regardless of your intentions, CS is a valuable tool every traveller should be packing.
