The Northern Lights have been on my list for a long time. I originally had them down as a Canada thing, but recently a friend of mine (from Finland) showed me this video of the Northern Lights filmed earlier this year in Lapland, Finland. It's an amazing video of an amazing phenomenon, so I figured I'd share it here.
The tail of a large Blue Whale with the coast of Newport Beach in the background
Most people from the OC don't even know, but every year they have hundreds of giant whales swimming past them in their annual migrations. If you find yourself looking for things to do in Orange County, head down to the Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach and hop on a whale watching boat. You'll find at least 2 companies running boats off the docks in the harbor, either one should be about the same, and tend to run a similar schedule. My mom lives in Orange County, and wanted to do a whale watching tour for her birthday, so we made a reservation on a boat for the family. On the day of the tour we were running late, and we went in the first whale watching company we found with our reservation, which they accepted and checked us in for the boat. It wasn't until a little while later that we realized we weren't at the same company we booked, but it was too late. Didn't matter in the end as we had a great tour anyways.
For any adrenaline fueled, adventure seeking individual planning on visiting Costa Rica, ziplining is a must! A perfect resort to encounter this experience was near the remote location of La Fortuna, a quaint town boasting a reputation for its spectaular setting overlooking the Arenal Volcano.
A opportunity to have an up close and personal encounter with one of the top 10 most active volcanos in the world may be an alarming and somewhat daunting prospect to many, but combining spectacular and breathtaking surroundings with a chance to witness a volcano in full flow (excuse the pun!), results in the Arenal Volcano National Park being a place definately worth checking out. The Volcano itself, set amongst a wildlife infested rainforest, is located roughly 16km west of La Fortuna, the areas most popular and well catered for local town. This is in fact where the majority of tours operate from and due to the number of hostels and budget hotels it provides an ideal location for any visitor who wishes to spend some time in the area.
Me struggling as I finish the hike up the Mt. Whitney snow chute
Mt. Whitney, the tallest point in the Sierra Nevadas and continental United States, is a popular climb during the California summer months. At around 21 miles round trip, climbing 6,132ft up to the peak at 14,497ft (4,418.69m), the hike is a doable in a day, but a challenge for those not in good shape (like me). As if it weren't enough of a challenge already, we attempted the summit early in the season while it still had a lot of snow cover.
A huge snapper caught with the head of a skipjack tuna in Tamarindo, Costa Rica
Tamarindo, located in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica, along with being a great surf and resort spot, is a really fun place to fish. I was there in December, which is supposed to be a good time to catch marlin and sailfish although we didn’t, but I had just as much fun reeling in the hard fighting skipjack and yellowfin tunas that bit almost every time we threw out a line. We were even lucky enough to catch a snapper.
Beachfront Bars and Restaurants on the bay in San Juan Del Sur
San Juan Del Sur is Nicaragua's Premier destination on the Pacific. The colorful buildings and gorgeous beaches make it an ideal stopover on your way through Nicaragua. Flying into Managua International Airport, take the local "chicken bus" to get to San Juan Del Sur. In Nicaragua they use re-painted old school buses for their public transport, you'll be amongst almost entirely locals, its cheaper and more fun.
One of New York's most iconic landmarks is Central Park, but what most visitors don't realize is that Central Park has slightly younger, slightly smaller, but equally as impressive brother in Brooklyn known as Prospect Park. Built in 1867, Prospect Park covers 585 acres of North Brooklyn. The highlights of Prospect Park include a 90 acre meadow, a 60 acre lake (the only lake in Brooklyn), a picnic house, a zoo, a cemetary, a concert venue, and plenty of athletic fields.
