Several of the apostles as seen from the helicopter
One of the most iconic Australian Adventures is the Great Ocean Road of Southern Victoria. The highlight of the Great Ocean Road tour is the 12 Apostles, and the best way to see them is by helicopter. I personally had never ridden in a helicopter before this, but had always wanted to. On our tour they announced we had the option to either walk down and check them out, or pay an additional $70 and fly over the 12 Apostles by helicopter. This was a no brainer for me, although that's a lot of money, it doesn't seem bad for a helicopter ride, and it's one of those once in a lifetime opportunities you can only regret not doing.

My friend posing with the Ati Tribesman for a photo as they spit fire
When traveling through the Philippines, we found ourselves in Cebu for 2 days, waiting for a flight to the island of Siargao. We didn't really know what we wanted to do, and in doing a little research discovered the island of Bohol, just a couple hours away from Cebu by ferry. The island, pronounced very similar to "Butthole", is best known for the Chocolate Hills of Bohol. When we arrived, we decided to rent scooters and explore the island that way. One of our destinations, a lazy 45 minute scooter ride away from our resort in the Mactan Island area of Bohol, was the Loboc River.

Polonnaruwa Vatadage is believed to have once held the Tooth Relic (Budhas Tooth)
One of the major attractions in the Sri Lankan Cultural Triangle area, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa is a massive spread out area full of nearly 1000 year old ruins. There is a lot of variety in the UNESCO World Heritage site, with some of the best ruins in Sri Lanka, amazing temples, statues, and a healthy variety of wildlife (mainly monkeys). It's easy to spend a full day or two exploring this ancient city, rent a bike or hire a driver and get lost in Polonnaruwa.

A wide view of the Kravice Waterfalls
The Kravice Waterfalls on the Trebizat River in Bosnia are some of the coolest I've been to. Tucked away in the trees just across the border from Crotia, the waterfall spans 120m (~390 feet) and falls 25m (~80 feet). The Kravice Falls area also has a little cafe, a rope swing, a picnic area, and a place to camp if you like. I had never heard of these waterfalls before arriving in Dubrovnik, I suppose Bosnia is not the most traveled of places, but these falls were well worth the visit.

The tail of a large Blue Whale with the coast of Newport Beach in the background
Most people from the OC don't even know, but every year they have hundreds of giant whales swimming past them in their annual migrations. If you find yourself looking for things to do in Orange County, head down to the Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Beach and hop on a whale watching boat. You'll find at least 2 companies running boats off the docks in the harbor, either one should be about the same, and tend to run a similar schedule. My mom lives in Orange County, and wanted to do a whale watching tour for her birthday, so we made a reservation on a boat for the family. On the day of the tour we were running late, and we went in the first whale watching company we found with our reservation, which they accepted and checked us in for the boat. It wasn't until a little while later that we realized we weren't at the same company we booked, but it was too late. Didn't matter in the end as we had a great tour anyways.

The last photo of our group as we arrive back in Lukla having completed the trek
The ATM was down in Namche so it took us a little while to get going in the morning, and we needed to pay the remainder of our tab with Boo. It's been surprisingly difficult to get cash since I've gotten to Nepal, but we got it all sorted. We finally got moving around 9:15 AM, and it was bright and sunny. We even got one more peek of Everest. Yesterday I tried to eat a normal meal, and my battered stomach didn't like that at all. I started to feel sick about an hour and a half into the hike, and I had to slow our pace way down.

Crossing a river which flooded and overtook the trail during the monsoon rains of day 10
When we woke up it was still raining heavily. There's nothing to do in Pangboche so the idea of staying there sounded worse than walking in the rain. Once we got confirmation from Boo that we could move our flight back up, it was worth pushing through to get to Namche today. Out into the rain we went, shortly before 11 AM. The rain meant that small streams were now gushing rivers, and there were massive waterfalls everywhere. Rivers were overflowing to the point that rocks that you used to be able to walk across were completely underwater. Jit was picking up rocks and carrying them across the rivers to make paths for us. It was crazy.

Panoramic views from the top of Kala Patthar
We woke up at 4:30 AM to try to get a glimpse of Everest at sunrise and set out at 5 AM in the dark. Dan led the pack up the hill, and he and I waited every few minutes to see the rest of the group's headlamps come into view while it was still dark. Once it got lighter we realized no one else was planning to go too far so we headed up with Jit. As the sun started to come up we saw incredible views of mountains in all directions. Massive peaks that shot up into the sky all around us. We even managed to get a few quick sightings of the pyramid peak of Everest before the clouds moved in right at sunrise and covered everything.

Colorful tents at the new Everest Base Camp
My stomach hurt all night, but I’m feeling ok this morning. Sam was sick again last night, but he feels up for the climb. Andrew seems better and wants to climb as well. Mike still hadn’t fully recovered but was in good shape to go up. I’m glad we don’t have to send anyone down to Pheriche. The rain we walked in yesterday turned to snow during the night. The landscape looks pretty with the dusting of white, but also very, very cold.

Yak along the river on the Everest trail, just outside Dughla
I slept well last night for the first time in quite a few days. I woke up at 6:30 AM, well before breakfast. Andrew was not too happy with me for being up so early, but it was an incredibly beautiful morning and I wanted to take it all in. This morning had the clearest skies we'd seen yet, and the mountains are simply stunning. Sam isn't doing so well. He was sick all night and didn't sleep much. He says he's feeling ok to climb. Andrew isn't feeling great either. He was accidentally taking malaria pills instead of the altitude pills.
