In the Middle of A Hot Air Balloon Crash
Snapping photos in the middle of the hot air balloon crash

Weeks into trekking through Asia we'd arrived at my favorite part of china, Yangshuo. After being hassled to buy DVDs for days, scammed at both the Beijing airport and the cab from the airport, we'd finally found our way from the smog that is Beijing. Yangshou, and that part of China look like the china you see in paintings, on their currency and in films. Towering peaks breaking low laying clouds, rivers snaking through lush terrain, picturesque clouds over mountains. Arriving in Yangshuo we soon found ourselves inner tubing through mud filled caves, eating pig penises on a stick and drinking God knows what, lots of animals penises in whisky I can only assume, it is China. Yangshuo is one of the more picturesque areas I've been too, very distinct and you've never seen another place like it. It’s beautiful. It's also fairly popular with hot air balloon rides. Did I say hot air balloon rides? Funny, I meant hot air balloon crashes.

A beach on Inishmore, Aran Islands, Ireland
One of the best looking beaches on Inishmore. Still a little too cold in mid-summer to swim

Like to be active and explore ruins? See prehistoric forts, 300ft cliffs, a castle, ancient cemeteries and beaches all within a 2 mile radius? Inishmore in the Aran Islands, just off the coast of the University city, Galway, is inch for inch one of the most historically saturated sites in Ireland, and while it may also be saturated with tourists, if you choose to explore the island on bike, you will get a glimpse of the solitude of Inishmore.

Largest Sand Island In the World – Fraser Island

Fraser Island Beach
Beaches, Streams, Sand Dunes and Forest cover Fraser Island

Fraser Island is one of the best places to visit in Australia, worth going out of your way to see. Fly into Brisbane, and head a couple hours North to Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, or Hervey Bay, the 3 crossing points over to Fraser. You have several options on how to get around: you can rent your own 4X4 doing everything yourself, do a self drive tour, where you ride along in a caravan of 4X4s, but drive your own vehicle, or take one of the massive offroad buses in a group of 15-25. I made the mistake of doing the bus tour, because my license had expired, and this tour provided transport in and out of Gold Coast; I knew straight away this was a mistake.

Best Way To Get Across Thailand

Koh Phi Phi Caves
A long boat going past a fishermans cave in Koh Phi Phi

Q. Couple questions... Right now we are just going to be on the west side of the islands in thailand. Do you recall it being easy to get to side to side? If so i really want to go to KohPhi Phi. We are going to get certified to dive in koh tao. Do you recommend that or should we do it in Koh Phi Phi?

Australian Scenic Road
A tourist drive in the Capricorn Coast of Central Queensland

Australia is one of the most beautiful places on the planet, and driving is one of the best ways to see it. If you find yourself road tripping across Australia, you'll notice they have a lot of scenic routes, and if you're not in a rush, you may find yourself tempted to take them. After several attempts this weekend, I recommend you research these routes before veering off course for them.

Blue Mountains, Just Outside of Sydney

Wentworth Falls, Australia
Wentworth Falls from the viewpoint across the canyon. You can't even see the entire thing!

The Blue Mountains are just a couple hours away from Central Sydney, and worth a visit if you have a few days. There are several tours operating out of Sydney, they cost about $70 aud and provide round trip transport, a guide, tea and cookies. The tour we went on included a boat cruise from Olympic Park Wharf to Circular Quay as well, stopping at Darling Harbor. This was a pleasant surprise as it meant we got a quick overview of Olympic Park also which was pretty cool, and saved me the train ride and time doing it myself.

Pools At Bondi Beach, Sydney
The swimming pools and world famous Bondi Beach

Sydney isn't complete without a trip to Bondi Beach. If it's your first time, you may as well see all the Eastern Beaches in one shot on this 3 hour ocean walk. Start at Coogee Bay and work your way past Bronte Beach, past Tamarama, and all the way to Bondi.

Fraser Island By Air

Maheno Shipwreck Ariel View, Fraser Island
Maheno Shipwreck as seen from the air

As soon as you arrive in Australia, you're going to hear about Fraser Island and The Whitsundays. Everybody sees Fraser Island by 4X4, which is amazing and has to be done, but while there I highly recomend you also splurge and pay the $75 to take the breif scenic flight over the island. How many places in the world do you get to use the beach as your runway? You get to see things from a completely different perspective; you also get to see things you probably won't make it to by car like Butterfly Lake. Chances are on a nice day you'll spot Stingrays, Manta Rays, Dolphins, and maybe even sharks. This is one of those things you need to put in perspective, I know $75 sounds like a lot, but take a night off the drink and do this instead.

Hyams Beach – Whitest Sand Beach In The World

Blue Water Lagoon on White Sands
Beautiful water and pure white sand at Hyams Beach, Australia

Officially the whitest sand in the world according to the Guiness Book of World Records, Hyams Beach at Jervis Bay is a great "off the beaten path" destination. A few hours south of Sydney, Jervis Bay is more of a local spot. Rent a car and drive yourself down; stay in a house on St Georges Basin Lake, or even on the beach, while only paying modest prices. You won't find crazy nightlife, or busy shops & restaurants, Jervis Bay is a place to get away from the masses of Bondi style beaches.

San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua

Beachfront Bars & Restaurants, San Juan Del Sur
Beachfront Bars and Restaurants on the bay in San Juan Del Sur

San Juan Del Sur is Nicaragua's Premier destination on the Pacific. The colorful buildings and gorgeous beaches make it an ideal stopover on your way through Nicaragua. Flying into Managua International Airport, take the local "chicken bus" to get to San Juan Del Sur. In Nicaragua they use re-painted old school buses for their public transport, you'll be amongst almost entirely locals, its cheaper and more fun.
