Ama Dablam

Resting With Ama Dablam in BackgroundAma Dablam is the first large peak you see on the Everest Base Camp Trek, and it stays in sight for several days. We woke up one morning on our EBC Trek in the village of Dingboche to find the clouds had cleared, the sun was shining, and we were left with spectacular views of the entire mountain. Ama Dablam (meaning Mother’s Necklace) is a beautiful peak because of it’s steep icy faces, and sometimes called the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas” for the same reason.

Although Ama Dablam is nowhere near as tall as Everest, it still measures a staggering 6,856 meters high (22,494 feet). Ama Dablam is another of the Nepalese Himalayan peaks which people summit, first conquered in 1961 by Mike Gill (NZ), Barry Bishop (USA), Mike Ward (UK) and Wally Romanes (NZ). Today Ama Dablam is the third most popular summit for climbing expeditions in the Himalayas. Generally people use the south west ridge for ascent, and setup 3 camps along the way. Ideal climbing times are April to May, and sometimes late September, October and November just after monsoon season. If you’re thinking of climbing Ama Dablam, know that this is not for beginners, Ama Dablam is a major mountain expedition.

Ama Dablam Expedition Video

Climber Philippe Gatta summits Ama Dablam (6856m) from the south west ridge and films the expedition. Before seeing this video I didn’t realize how intense this climb actually is, definitely watch the video and see for yourself. There are some beautiful shots, and it’s well made, I highly recommend you watch this one if you’re interested in seeing what an Ama Dablam expedition is really like.
