Kata Tjuta – The Olgas, Australia

The Olgas, Australia
The Olgas in the Northern Territory of Australia

Kata Tjuta, otherwise known as The Olgas, are set within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The alternative name given ‘the olgas’ actually means ‘many heads’ in traditional Aboriginal language. Kata Tjuta is a rock formation made up of 36 rounded domes. The tallest domes is called mount olga and is 546m, 200m higher than ayres rock. As its set within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park there is an entrance fee of $25 which is a 3 day pass and must be kept with you at all times as you could face fines if checked by the park rangers.

There are two walks that you can take around the Olgas. The Valley of the Winds Walk is along a 7km track that circles several of the Olgas. If the temperature is due to be 36 degrees or more then this walk is closed from 11am, so get there early to avoid disappointment. The other walk that is available is the Olga Gorge Walk (Tatintjawiya), which is a 2km walk into the gorge. The Short walk in to the gorge its not the most scenic walk but its worth going to see for the strange shapes and formation of the rock its self and getting the pass to the park also acts as a pass for Ayres Rock so worth the money. If you have a car or go on a tour Kata Tjuta is much more appealing from a distance and there are many places to view it from afar with great photos with the sun setting behind. The site is as sacred to aboriginal people as Uluru.
