Many of the photos you see on this blog have been taken with one my Olympus Stylus Tough point and shoot cameras. When I travel I like to bring my Canon EOS Digital Rebel T2i for the majority of my shots, and a waterproof / shockproof point and shoot for when I’m in the water or go out drinking. Problem is, I’ve had several of the Olympus’ leak water over the years. I’m currently on my 4th of its kind, which at the moment has a scratched lens and has leaked water, but partially recovered to the point where it still mostly works. I’ve decided its time for a change with news of the brand new and first of its kind Nikon Waterproof Camera.
I’ve never been a fan of Olympus cameras, but I’ve owned one since the first waterproof / shockproof stylus tough came out several years ago. The image quality has always been mediocre, even bad at night, but the benefits of the underwater abilities, and peace of mind that if I drop it or accidentally get it wet have outweighed this. However, now that Nikon has stepped into the market, I can get the best of both worlds; a higher quality image with the same underwater capabilities and indestructible camera. I know the newest Olympus has it as well, but I’m also excited for the Nikon’s built in GPS which automatically geo-tags the photos. Plus the proprietary Olympus XD memory card format is annoying, it’ll be nice to switch back to the more standard SD card.
I haven’t purchased this camera yet, but plan to soon. If you have experience or feedback on the AW 100 please discuss it in the comments, I’d love to hear from someone firsthand on how they actually like it.
