Questions For 10 Day Trip Between Istanbul & Split

Walking to Kravice Waterfall Pools
About to go for a swim through the frigid cold water out to the waterfalls

Q. I am going to croatia for a week and the end of august but will have about 10 days before our boat trip there to cruise around eastern europe. will probably start in istanbul and work our way up to split. what cities would you recommend going to and what is the best way to get around through there?

Nice! You doing that sail Croatia tour? That looks amazing. I haven’t been to Albania, but would like to. Varna was cool but not amazing, decent beach and decent nightlife. Apparently Sofia sucks (according to Neeraj and Peanut). Dubrovnik is worth a visit, and you can do a day trip to Mostar from there. On the day trip we also visited these cool waterfalls called Kravice and a couple other things like a nice dinner and some farm where we rode horses. Another cool day trip from Dubrovnik was to Kotor Montenegro, there is a sweet castle on a hill and some really cool views. For Croatia we rented a car and drove from Split to Dubrovnik, then back up to Zagreb, so we had it for the trip to Montenegro. I normally don’t recommend renting cars like that but it worked out well this time. Belgrade is cool, especially for nightlife. I liked Bucharest (I tend to like everywhere though), but my favorite part of Romania were the mountains, and I don’t think you’ll have time for that. If you want more black sea you can go east to Mamaia (near Constanta), its kind of like a Miami-ish town with a bit of a carnival atmosphere mixed in. Also like a bigger Varna, might not want to do both those cities if you only have 10 days. You could swing through Sarajevo on your way, never made it there, slept through my alarm the morning I was supposed to go there and had to alter my plans.

You’re looking at mainly trains and buses to get around.  Buses are the main way I’ve got around in Turkey, but to go North to Bulgaria from Istanbul you’ll probably do a train.  I think we bused it from Varna to Bucharest, and to and from Mamaia as well, then trained to northern Romania and also over to Belgrade.  We did primarily our rental car and mini-buses organized on day tours to get around Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro, I think they also have a decent bus system though.

I know this is way too much for 10 days, but I figured you can pick your poison from here.  If you want help narrowing down the list I’m happy to shoot some more emails back and forth and cut stuff out if you tell me more of what you’re looking to do and see.  Sorry its kind of all over the place, I just threw my thoughts down as they came.  If it helps you can browse my photos on flickr, the region you’re looking at is around the middle on this page:
