San Juan Del Sur is Nicaragua’s Premier destination on the Pacific. The colorful buildings and gorgeous beaches make it an ideal stopover on your way through Nicaragua. Flying into Managua International Airport, take the local “chicken bus” to get to San Juan Del Sur. In Nicaragua they use re-painted old school buses for their public transport, you’ll be amongst almost entirely locals, its cheaper and more fun.
Once you arrive you have easy access to several good beaches, Playa Maderas, Playa Yankee, as well as Playa Colorado and Panga Drops close by. The city also has a statue similar to Christ the Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro, its smaller and not as prominent, however still pretty cool. San Juan Del Sur is definetely worth at least a few days, you can go beach by day, explore several of them, or even stay on one for a night. Back in town you can count on some nightlife, mostly just backpackers though. Take one night and see the turtles come and lay eggs at the La Flor Sea Turtle Reserve (seasonal – July through November).
The closest beach, Playa Maderas, was recently featured on Survivor Nicaragua. It also produces some excellent surfing waves, for more info about Pleaya Maderas see: Surfing Maderas Beach, San Juan Del Sur – Nicaragua
