The Monastery hidden deep in the mountains of Petra
One of my favorite places I've been to in all my travels has to be The Ancient City of Petra in Jordan. Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a New 7 Wonder of the World, so there are plenty of resources for you to get detailed information about it. BBC calls Petra a top 40 must see place before you die, and UNESCO says it's "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage". These are very bold statements, and I agree with both wholeheartedly.

One of the famous cave paintings at Sigirya
One of the coolest places in Sri Lanka has to be the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. It doesn't look like much from afar, and even from a lot of photos you see online, but when you get there and get to walking around you see why UNESCO has declared Sigiriya as the 8th Wonder of the World. Monastery turned King's Fortress, turned back to Monastery, Sigiriya has had quite a dynamic past.

A rainbow over a building in the Scottish Countryside (not an actual Monastery)
One of the best ways to travel through Europe on a budget is to stay at Monasteries. Monasteries are generally cheaper then hotels (and sometimes even hostels) and they provide basic accommodation and even include meals depending on which monastery you're staying at. Don't expect luxury accommodation because you won't get it. Usually you get a private room with a bed and access to a shared bathroom. This may not seem like much but in fact it’s more than you get at a hostel for the same price.
