ATV Mui Ne White Dunes
My friend riding his ATV in front of a huge white dune with no footprints

Mui Ne has some of the craziest sand/soil I’ve ever seen, the reds were darker than I’ve seen even in Australia. The big draw for tourists in Mui Ne, other than the world class kite surfing, is the sand dune tour. We mentioned these tours in the Mui Ne Fairy Stream article, and we also mentioned how the Fairy Stream was more unique and we liked it better, however the sand dunes were a good visit as well. There are 2 sets of dunes the jeeps will take you to, one is white, and one is orange. The better ones in my opinion were the white sand dunes, and that’s what we’re talking about here.

Ferry Stream Turns Red, Mui Ne
The soil begins to darken along the Fairy Stream

Mui Ne, Vietnam is mainly known for 2 things to the traveller (if you’ve even heard of it): Kite Surfing and Sand Dunes.  Most people that go see the sand dunes book a trip by jeep, and they throw in a few extra bonus stops along the way.  The Ferry Stream is kind of brushed off as an additional stop on the sand dunes tour; however it was actually better than the dunes themselves.  They’re not marketed well, and it’s really unofficial when you get there, but as tourism in Mui Ne grows, I’m sure they’ll become more well known.

Largest Sand Island In the World – Fraser Island

Fraser Island Beach
Beaches, Streams, Sand Dunes and Forest cover Fraser Island

Fraser Island is one of the best places to visit in Australia, worth going out of your way to see. Fly into Brisbane, and head a couple hours North to Rainbow Beach, Tin Can Bay, or Hervey Bay, the 3 crossing points over to Fraser. You have several options on how to get around: you can rent your own 4X4 doing everything yourself, do a self drive tour, where you ride along in a caravan of 4X4s, but drive your own vehicle, or take one of the massive offroad buses in a group of 15-25. I made the mistake of doing the bus tour, because my license had expired, and this tour provided transport in and out of Gold Coast; I knew straight away this was a mistake.

Lake Wabby, Fraser Island

Lake Wabby Beach, Fraser Island
The beach at Lake Wabby is at a steep incline from the sand dune, it gets pretty crowded

One of the many lakes on Fraser Island, Lake Wabby is an essential stop on your Fraser excursion. Its like a desert oasis in that you've got to hike several kilometers from the beach, with the end being through a sand dune, and over a hill, where you'll stumble upon the lake in the middle of nowhere. Its algae covered bottom gives it a dark green color, but the water is actually quite clear. In it you'll find loads of catfish swiming around you, it seems as if you can reach out and grab them, but apparently nobody has ever been fast enough to actually catch one.

Fraser Island By Air

Maheno Shipwreck as seen from the air

As soon as you arrive in Australia, you're going to hear about Fraser Island and The Whitsundays. Everybody sees Fraser Island by 4X4, which is amazing and has to be done, but while there I highly recomend you also splurge and pay the $75 to take the breif scenic flight over the island. How many places in the world do you get to use the beach as your runway? You get to see things from a completely different perspective; you also get to see things you probably won't make it to by car like Butterfly Lake. Chances are on a nice day you'll spot Stingrays, Manta Rays, Dolphins, and maybe even sharks. This is one of those things you need to put in perspective, I know $75 sounds like a lot, but take a night off the drink and do this instead.

Q. Can you whip me up a quick travel guide to Vietnam? I know the basics, but anything you did, saw, ate, good places you stayed, etc which you recommend? Thanks!
